The Advantages Of Reading Comics For Children

Don’t you know how to catch your child to introduce him to reading? Comics can be an excellent alternative to that end. In addition, they have many other advantages.
The advantages of reading comics for children

Reading comics is one of those pleasures worth toasting from childhood. Not only because they are entertaining but because they contribute a lot to the cognitive development of children. It even helps them to be more thoughtful and imaginative.

The vivid colors and the adventures of the characters that are described captivate both children and adults. In fact, until a few decades ago it was very common to see many grandparents enjoying comic book sagas that they began to read from childhood.

Some examples of this are: Tintin, Don Quixote (the adaptation of the golden classic of Spanish literature), Sherlock Holmes, among others. Without a doubt, comics have an irreplaceable charm.

The best thing about comics is that much of their magic has remained unchanged over the years. Like so many other things, comics have become immortal and have even become unmissable references in popular culture.

Characteristics of the comics

Comics are comic magazines that tell the experiences of superheroes and villains. The following elements are characterized in their stories:

  • They have bright and vivid colors.
  • They use onomatopoeia to compensate for the logical absence of sound.
  • They can tell a story in each installment or be divided into chapters.
  • They use a  wide variety of linguistic resources : flashbacks, flash-forwards  and a permanent connection between text and image.
  • They have  their own codes, such as the vignettes, the balloons, the gestures marked on the characters.

Stimulate the imagination

What better for a boy’s imagination than to read exciting adventures full of new challenges every week?

The characters, their powers and the powerful villains characteristic of each comic strip allow the child to enter a deep world of fantasy.

This leads to numerous games, drawings and other activities related to reading. Also, trying to guess what might happen in the next installment is another good exercise to get the most out of the comics.

Promotes exchange and interpersonal relationships

Although perhaps not to the extent of times past, comic book shops are almost like neighborhood clubs. In them many boys meet who share not only interests, but also a passion for these types of stories.

In addition to providing the chance to meet new friends, comics are at the center of many huge events that open the door to new experiences.

The San Diego International Comics Convention —the so famous Comic-Con— is an example of this. But there are also national and local events specific to each region.

Expand vocabulary and improve spelling

Like any other type of reading, reading comics involves the incorporation of new words and phrases. In fact, comics often feature a peculiar use of punctuation marks, so this is a good opportunity to clarify their possible uses.

It is an excellent hobby

Beyond all the above, an essential aspect of comics cannot be overlooked: they are extremely funny. A child can spend hours reading the adventures of his favorite superhero.

In those comics that have been in circulation for many years, it is even possible to review previous installments and relive those stories. Many times a new reading allows us to discover things that until that moment had gone unnoticed.

They form a collection with unforgettable memories

The advantages of reading comics from childhood.

Many people collect comics throughout their childhood and adolescence. Years later, these magazines allow you to travel back in time and be transported to those times.

Just by opening them and feeling their smell, one automatically remembers those moments when they were one of the main entertainments.

Even many collections acquire greater value over time, especially those with limited editions.

Considering all the above, we can affirm that comics have not gone out of style – at least for now – and that their magic is still intact.

If your child doesn’t have any yet, think about it: this can be a great gift that may spark an unfamiliar taste for reading, adventure, and superheroes.
